Star Wars: Squadrons Review — a compelling starfighter

I have to say that I am fan of the Star Wars movies, but the video games were not always at the level expected from such a magnificent franchise. I was waiting eagerly the new Star Wars: Squadrons video game, very curious to see how it looks and feel. This game is a starship simulator space combat video game, played from the first-person perspective. Star Wars: Squadrons is developed by Motive Studios and published by Electronic Arts on 2 October 2020. It is released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC.

Star Wars: Squadrons is set after “Return of the Jedi”- the Star Wars Episode VI and put players in the cockpit of starfighters from either the Galactic Empire and the New Republic navy. If you do not remember this episode, than you should know that it is after the destruction of the second Death Star. From the fertile limbo between the original trilogy and the sequels, Squadrons tells the story of two elite forces as they struggle to wrest control of a brand new weapons project developed by the Rebellion New Republic.

The participant flits between the Empire’s Titan and the New Republic’s Vanguard squadrons over the course of several chapters, giving the campaign a nice sense of flow and development. There’s plenty of military fluff thrown around, but the personal tussle between Empire commander Terisa Kerrill and her former (now-defected) senior Lindon Javes manages to cut through the noise and keep you engaged.

Star Wars: Squadrons presents a single-player campaign mode and two multiplayer modes. The campaign mode or “Story” mode, is following the movie’s script and place players after the destruction of the second Death Star and it will alternate between two pilots that may very well be customized in some ways. One is part of the New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron, and the other is a member of the Empire’s Titan Squadron.

The campaign is in fact a tale of mission moments, and these are the things that burn off in the memory. On several occasions you’re invited to squeeze through tight tunnels or carefully steer inside a massive spaceship, in a nice call-back into the destruction of the second Death Star. To complete the Story it takes about 10 hours. The single-player story eases you into the intricacies the game title needs from you, casting you as two different pilots on opposing sides of the skirmishes in the wake of the second Death Star’s destruction.

The multiplayer is the better part of this video game. One mode is the “Dogfight”, where ten players are divided between two squads of pilots that will fight each other in a way similar to a team deathmatch. The other mode — “Fleet Battles”, split the players in two teams of five players that have the mission to destroy the adversary’s Capital Ships. With multiplayer serving as the centerpiece of the console game, customization will be key to keep users happy well into the future. That part looks promising, as users can personalize weapon loadouts, utilities (like a repair droid or a strategic shield the Tie Reaper can attach to normally unshielded TIEs), countermeasures, shields (for those ships which have them), armor and engines.

Both game modes of Star Wars: Squadrons are excellent; the inclusion of human foes imbues feverish dogfights with additional camaraderie and unpredictability. No more game modesare planned for the game, but this one is already a great simulator. There is a development system, but it is refreshingly easy compared to most video games in 2020. (It seems that it is easier to pilot a starfighter than an airplane). There is no battle pass or superior currency here — you simply play multiplayer matches, rank up, and use your rewards to unlock makeup and extra ship components. Those unlocks are nice, but I mostly want to keep playing Star Wars: Squadrons since it’s so enjoyable to fly.

I played Star Wars: Squadrons on PS4 and it was amazing, especially on multiplayer mode, where I had the most fun. I buy my copy from BuyGames — the store where you can buy cheap ps5 games. I am not affiliated with them, nor with EA Sports. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I will do my best to reply to all comments quickly. Have fun playing Squadrons on your platform.
