Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is an action-adventure first-person shooter video game developed for ps4, xbox one, pc and switch by Machine Games and published by Bethesda Softworks on 27 October 2017. The players assume the role of B.J. Blazkowicz, an American soldier who fights against the Nazis in a dystopian fictional world of 1961 USA, after the Second World War was won by the Nazis. His mission is to save the world and he needs all the help he can gets. Our hero is part of a resistance cell, using traditional and futuristic firearms to kill enemy soldiers and larger mechanized units. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is one great fps video game to play.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Rainbow Six Siege is the latest installment of the acclaimed first-person shooter franchise developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The game was released on December 1, 2015 for ps4 and xbox one. The game may be best described as a tactical shooter. In comparison to games like Halo and Call of Duty that provide nonstop action, Rainbow Six puts a focus on careful strategy and stresses team tactics as well as cooperation. Players can choose from a variety of unique Counter Terrorist Operators (CTO) and engage in tangible sieges, a new style of assault in which enemies have the means to transform their environments into modern strongholds while Rainbow Six teams lead the assault to breach the enemy’s position. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is an excellent fps to play online and one of our favorites.
Battlefield V
EA bring into the first-person shooting games Battlefield V, developed by EA DICE and released in 2018 (October 19) by Electronic Arts for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The action takes place in the Second World War (where the previous was set in the WW1 time). The game is hugely entertaining for fps fans that enjoy participating in a realistic depiction of war. Battlefield V is a multiplayer game, bringing it’s own “battle royale” into the market with 64 players that try to survive in a last-man standing online scenario. It is not the number of players, but the atmosphere of the World War II battlefield that distinguish Battlefield by other battle royale video games. For a battle realistic video game, Battlefield V is a great choice.
Rage 2
To create Rage 2, two video game developer giants join forces: Avalanche Studios (a Stockholm based studio known for their open-map video games, authors of Just Cause series and owners of Apex game engine) and id Software (the US based company, legendary authors of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein series). Rage 2 was released at May 14, 2019 by Bethesda Softworks and it comes at 8 years distance of the first Rage game. It is a highly addictive first-person shooter, high on sale, high on players preferences, but received with split fillings by game critics. It scores high on combat, the players can use everything and blow up anything in their way, but many pointed out that the story is rather week, so is the open world gameplay. It was not very clear if they achieved the goals of creating a “shooterverse”, something that it is more than a fps and more than an open-world. I believe it should be consider a first-person shooter, as the game exceeds only in these aspects of shooting. So if you are interested in blowing up things and kill enemies in a post-apocalyptic world, Rage 2 should be one of the top choices.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Even if an older game (released in 2016), Call of Duty Infinite Warfare worth to be consider as one of the best first person shooters available. Call of Duty is a well known franchise loved by players all over the world, the Infinite Warfare was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. The game is available for all platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. The game has something that any passionate of shooting games loves: a Zombie campaign. The game has new mechanics and brings new gameplay features, some of them unique to this game, like the concept of “crafting”. On short, players can craft their own weapons prototypes from salvage and make up weapons customized by themselves. Besides the Zombie mode, players can chose Campaign or Multiplayer modes. Also it worth mentioning the new and original co-op Zombie mode. Call of Duty Infinite Warfare is one of the best selling games, ranking fourth in best-selling category for Xbox One.
Destiny 2
Destiny 2 is sci-fi first-person shooter set in a mythic world atmosphere developed by Bungie and currently published by the same company that aquired the rights from Activision at the beginning of 2019. The was released on September 6, 2017 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (soon after, it come to the PC as well). An expansion pack was released on May 8, 2018, called Destiny 2: Warmind, with a new story. Destiny 2 is one of the massively mutiplayer online game (MMO) with huge followers. The players create their own characters called “Guardians” and their task is to protect humanity by the Red Legion, the enemies’ army that occupied the Earth. The game features a nice story, a lot of role-playing, plenty of weapons, an universe to explore with many exotic worlds, story missions and side quests. It can be played alone, cooperative and competitive. This is one of the fps with a strong story and lots of content.
Far Cry 5
Far Cry 5 is an action-arcade first-person shooter video game set up in Hope County, Montana. This piece of USA, the land of the free and the brave, is threaten by a fanatical doomsday cult, The Project at Eden’s Gate, who has its leader in Joseph Seed. The player assume the role of a deputy sheriff that will have to battle for freedom with enemies, both human and wildlife. The graphic is wonderful, the story is solid and the dialogues are witty and entertaining. The game features a map editor that gives the author the ability to create solo maps, 2-player co-op maps and even multi-player maps for up to 12 players simultaneously. Far Cry 5 impress with the feeling of adventure that makes the most impression on players. This is due to the characters, open-map and role-playing elements like side quests and branching storyline. Far Cry 5 is an Ubisoft business: developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto and published by Ubisoft. The game was released at March 27, 2018 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. This is a video game that it worth every penny, highly recommended.
Call of Duty: WWII
Call of Duty WWII is a second world war first-person shooter video game developed by Sledgehammer Games and launched by Activision at November 3, 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Call of Duty WWII is a return to the game’s origin in 2008: Call of Duty: World at War. The previous Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty game — Advance Warfare in 2014, featured a futuristic atmosphere with unrealistic weapons. Coming back to a realistic atmosphere was a good decision and fans appreciated it. The game takes place on Western Front on D-Day, playing events of Operation Overlord. Besides the campaign mode, where the player controls Ronald “Red” Daniels in battle, Call of Duty WWII has a multiplayer mode with new map locations, unseen in the single player mode. One of the attractions of the game is the Nazi Zombies. This way, we have three great game modes: Campaign, Multiplayer and Coop.
Doom
Doom is a legendary game created by id Software and published by Bethesda at May 13, 2016 for Xbox One and PS4 (it is also available for PC, Switch and Google Stadia). This first-person shooter mark a reboot of the franchise (the previous Doom — Doom 3 — was released in 2004) on the id Tech 6 engine. It is the fourth title of the series and it is considered a major one. The action is taking place on planet Mars in a future where the planet is colonized by humans. The players assume the role of a space marine (unnamed) who has to fight against demonic forces unleashed by a corrupt corporation (the Union Aerospace Corporation). The game features a single player campaign and a multiplayer mode. The gameplay received glorious reviews and high praise from public and critics, the general opinion being that it successfully recaptured the spirit of the 1990’s classic Doom video game. It is a fast pace shooter with a few open ended levels, environmental traversal, character upgrades and “glory kills” — the power to perform executions, killing nearly dead enemies with a close-up melee “glory kill.” in order to obtain small amounts of health and armor. Doom is full with adrenaline and highly addictive. Doom is also a game that you can play again and again — high replayability feature — even in the single-player mode. Doom is the game that any respectful gamer played — highly recommended!
Metro Exodus
Metro Exodus is a fps game published by Deep Silver in 2019 (February 15) for PS4 and Xbox One (also Windows and Stadia). Metro games follow the novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, a Russian SF author. Metro Exodus is the third game of the series, developed by 4A Games (an Ukrainian-Maltese game company). The games take place in a post apocalyptic wasteland, somewhere in the former Russian Federation territory. The players has to fight elements and combat against mutants and hostile human adversaries. Metro Exodus is a first-person shooter, but besides the shooting features, it is important the survival skills and stealth playgame. In this sense, the dynamic weather system, the changing seasons and the day-nigh cycle that affect gameplay, are extremely important setting apart the game from other first person shooters. Metro Exodus is an ambitious project and the scale of the game is huge! The quality is awesome, the gameplay is different than the fast-paced shooters like Doom… this is a rather smart shooter, meant to play slowly, taking in everything, making plans, creating a strategy to survive in a hostile environment. The graphic is gorgeous, sometime chillingly scary, exactly the kind of atmosphere you expect in a post-apocalyptic world. Metro Exodus exceeds in in-depth details, beautifully created. The sound is also carefully crafted and fits the atmosphere wonderfully. Last, but not least, the story is very good (as you would expect from a game following some good books) — on a world devastated by a nuclear war, some few survivors try to survive in the tunnels of the Moscow’s Metro. This is one of the best fps games available.
